چکیده
Abstract Using Athena++ , we perform 3D radiation-hydrodynamic calculations of the radiative breakout shock wave in outer envelope a red supergiant (RSG) that has suffered core collapse and will become Type IIP supernova. The intrinsically structure fully convective RSG yields key differences brightness duration (SBO) from predicted 1D stellar model. First, lower-density “halo” material outside traditional photosphere models leads to at lower densities than models. This would prolong flash any given location on surface ?1–2 hr. However, find even larger impact is effect associated with large-scale fluctuations density cause break out different radii times. substantially prolongs SBO ?3–6 hr implies diversity temperatures, as patches across are stages their cooling time. These durations better agreement existing observations SBO. longer luminosities by factor 3–10 ( L bol ? 10 44 erg s ?1 ), derive new scalings explosion energies properties. properties eliminate possibility using observed rise times measure radius via light-travel time effects.

Supernova shock breakout from a red supergiant.
Massive stars undergo a violent death when the supply of nuclear fuel in their cores is exhausted, resulting in a catastrophic "core-collapse" supernova. Such events are usually only detected at least a few days after the star has exploded. Observations of the supernova SNLS-04D2dc with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer space telescope reveal a radiative precursor from the supernova shock before th...
متن کاملThree Dimensional Thermal Shock Problem in Magneto-Thermoelastic Orthotropic Medium
The paper is concerned with the study of magneto-thermoelastic interactions in three dimensional thermoelastic medium under the purview of three-phase-lag model of generalized thermoelasticity. The medium under consideration is assumed to be homogeneous orthotropic medium. The fundamental equations of the three-dimensional problem of generalized thermoelasticity are obtained as a vector-matrix ...
متن کاملThree-dimensional Simulations of Tidally Disrupted Solar-type Stars and the Observational Signatures of Shock Breakout
We describe a three-dimensional simulation of a 1M⊙ solar-type star approaching a 10M⊙ black hole on a parabolic orbit with a pericenter distance well within the tidal radius. While falling towards the black hole, the star is not only stretched along the orbital direction but even more severely compressed at right angles to the orbit. The overbearing degree of compression achieved shortly after...
متن کاملThe Main Sequence of three Red Supergiant Clusters
Massive clusters in our Galaxy are an ideal testbed to investigate the properties and evolution of high mass stars. They provide statistically significant samples of massive stars of uniform ages. To accurately determine the intrinsic physical properties of these stars we need to establish the distances, ages and reddening of the clusters. One avenue to achieve this is the identification and ch...
متن کاملA Runaway Red Supergiant in M31
A significant percentage of OB stars are runaways, so we can expect a similar percentage of their evolved descendants to also be runaways. However, recognizing such stars presents its own set of challenges, as these older, more evolved stars will have drifted farther from their birthplace, and thus their velocities might not be obviously peculiar. Several Galactic red supergiants (RSGs) have be...
